| Discipleship Path |
A disciple is a person who loves God, loves others, and serves as he or she mentors others to do the same. The Discipleship Path moves a person from salvation (acceptance of God’s unconditional grace, known in Jesus Christ), to spiritual maturity, to significant ministry. You are invited to join in our quarterly Discipleship Path workshops where we journey together on a path leading to a deeper faith, a more powerful ministry and a joy-filled, fruitful life. May the living Spirit of God unite and empower us as we walk together. The journey of the disciple as modeled by those who were first called out by Jesus was one of intentional growth, constantly seeking a deeper spiritual life while sharing in significant ministry to the world. Our decision at Batavia United Methodist to become a multi-site church was a simple response to the call of Jesus Christ. The same call that moved the first Disciples to leave the fear-filled confines of the upper room and go into the hostile streets of Jerusalem. The same call that inspired John Wesley to bring the gospel to the streets of England and send missionaries to America. The same call that led David Blackwell to ride the Fox River Circuit and begin a Methodist Society in the small village of Batavia. The same call that led a growing congregation in a historic stone church to see beyond the limitations of its building and reach out to a new mission field on the far west side of Aurora. The call was spoken in the last words the early disciples remember Jesus saying, “Go be my witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and to the ends of the world.” With these words Jesus laid out the marching orders of every church. The church is a “sent” church. The mission of the church is to be a witness to Jesus Christ everywhere. The mission of the church is to take the message to the street and be the best witness to Jesus Christ we can be. It means never hunkering down in complacency, contentment or fear of the future. It means spending our time, energy, and money so the story continues to be told and the church continues to be a sign of the coming Kingdom. Our passionate embrace of the call of Jesus to “Go be my witnesses,” in Batavia, at Flowing Grace and wherever else the Spirit might lead us is the solid foundation on which our church stands and the inspiration that unites us in a common mission. We begin our journey on the Disciple Path with RENEW The next step on the path is LOVE GOD We’ll continue our journey together with LOVE OTHERS And finally we reach out and SERVE You may register for any of these classes here. Disciples will not be fully made in a 16 hour class structure. Discipleship is a life-long journey of ups and downs, summits and valleys. Therefore, members and friends of Batavia United Methodist Church at both campuses are encouraged to continue on the path after the completion of each class. Following each step is a series of follow-up classes which will enhance what you have learned, build a solid foundation, and open doors to new opportunities on your Discipleship Journey. |
